Awards

The Newquay Road Runners awards a number of individuals with various trophies & shields which are presented in recognition of peoples achievements and contributions over the last year. These awards are distributed annually at the Newquay Road Runners Dinner & Dance evening.

The David Wooldridge Memorial Trophy

David Wooldridge was a member of the Newquay Road Runners. Unfortunately, David passed away in February 2017 after a prolonged brave fight against a brain tumour which had been diagnosed just after the Trevornick 10-mile race in May of 2016 – a race which he completed despite suffering partial paralysis at the halfway point. This award is dedicated to David and recognizes a member’s endeavour in the face of adversity.

The Handicap Shield

This is a shield which the club’s Treasurer, Colin Martin, kindly co-ordinates and calculates from the various results throughout the year.  It works on the best scores from eight, of the fifteen races that club members have completed in the Cornish Grand Prix Road Running Series.

The Val Hawken Inspirational Trophy

Val Hawken, is a well-known Newquay Road Runner who, over the years, has raised a considerable amount of money for charity by running numerous marathons. This trophy is awarded to an inspirational member who is always working hard to do the very best they can.

The Chair’s Award

This is an award that the chair of the running club gets to present to a person that they feel deserves recognition for their contribution and achievements over the last twelve months.

The Silas Byrne Trophy

Silas Byrne was a regular club member in the early nineties, who unfortunately collapsed after crossing the finish line of the Wadebridge 7-mile road race.  Sadly, he didn’t recover and this trophy has kindly been donated by his family.

Each year, club members are asked to nominate a NRR colleague who they consider has contributed a lot to the club during the year.  This award is not geared solely to running achievement, but also to members who give up their time and work on behalf of the club. The member who receives the most nominations wins the Silas Byrne Trophy.
