King Sisters Do Themselves Proud In Sardinia 70.3 Race..!
The last Sunday in October saw two dedicated sisters take part in their first ever endurance triathlon on the picturesque Island of Sardinia. Melissa and Milly King competed in the Challenge Forte Village 70.3 triathlon race which incorporates a 1.2 mile sea swim, a 56 mile cycle and a 13.1 mile half marathon run, so not one for the faint-hearted!
Melissa, who lives in Newquay, was thrilled with her overall finish time of just over 5hrs, this gave her a very respectable second placing in her age-group. Melissa commented “I had an amazing swim and was 6th female out of the water, which meant I was ahead of some of the pros! The men’s wave had started slightly before us, but it didn’t take long to catch up with some of the slower swimmers, so it was a bit tricky finding my way through them”. Melissa continued “When I got on the bike the coastal views were spectacular but the course was very hilly and the stiff head winds were tough”. Despite the challenging route, Melissa was the first non-pro to finish on the bike which put her in a very strong position going into the run. Unfortunately, not having run the half marathon distance since 2007, she felt a little unwell and struggled to hold-off a challenge for the lead in the age-group category, so had to settle for second place as she crossed the finish line. “I was really pleased to have finished second in my age-group, all be it a little frustrated having lost the lead on the run” said Melissa.
Sister Milly, who lives in out of County, also did very well and was only 20 minutes behind Melissa having thoroughly enjoyed her first endurance triathlon race. Melissa’s parting statement summed up their achievements “Not bad for our first half ironman distance, but the full distance would definitely be a step too far and something I’ll never, never take on..!”
