THE SMUGGLERS’ SCUTTLER report by Keith Hill
Saturday 30th June saw 100 athletes, the race limit, set off from Land’s End at 10.00am for this tough and challenging 13.1 mile multi terrain course on a hot and sultry day with very little breeze to cool the runners down. The stunning and very rugged coast path is tough at the best of times and 15 failed to make the whole route, the 85 that did had to collect their ‘booty’ at the stunning Cape Cornwall consisting of tea, 3 gold coins and a bottle of rum. Before heading back to Land’s End, avoiding the ‘customs officers’ who would try to take their treasure from them! Many of the runners running in fancy dress in that heat too! – but all in all a cracking race, faultless as always as organised by Dave Andrewartha and his crew at Bys Vyken.
In the field there was a trio of Newquay Road Runners led home by Frazer Mountford whose 2 hours 41 minutes 21 seconds placed him a very credible 13th overall, next home for the club was Sarah Hill in 22nd position overall and 4th lady in a time of 2.56.44, Steve Elson was a couple of further places back just 11 seconds behind Sarah. Sarah managing to finish took tremendous courage as she slipped at about mile six injuring her knee once again (previously severed ACL).
Unfortunately, Sarah had to visit Treliske the following day for treatment and has been advised to rest from running yet again.
The race was won by young James Brydon, running for the Personal Best team, in a time of 2.02.47 which was outstanding his running is going from strength to strength and he’s so at home on this terrain. The first lady home was Anna Pascoe running for the Bys Vyken Race Team in a time of 2.32.07 which placed her 7th overall
