Kevin Sharp Memorial Trophy
Whilst all competitors were delighted and happy with how the race went, it was also the event when the running community reflect and remember the late Kevin Sharp.
Kevin, who worked for the National Trust, was a keen runner and a member of Newquay Road Runners. He was also an experienced mountain climber. In November 2007, he was part of a group of six taking part in a climb in Chile. It was learned that five members of the team experienced problems due to the altitude and aborted their climb. Kevin continued the climb alone but has not been seen since.
The annual Newquay 10k now incorporates an Under 20 age group category, with the winners awarded the Kevin Sharp Memorial Trophy. The trophy and all other prizes in this category are kindly donated by Kevin’s parents Colin and Avril who continue to support the event each year.
In the male under-20 race this was won by Cornwall ACs Sam Goodchild who was 7th overall in 35.12 and amazing performance as he ran the previous day at Stover, Devon in the SW Schools XC Championships over a tough and very muddy course. There was a 1st & 2nd for the host club in the female under-20 event with Leigh Spencer taking the honours with a splendid time of 47.02 with Sophie Talling also running well to take the runner-up position in 48.55.
Kevin is missed by all those who were fortunate enough to have known him.
