OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCES BY NEWQUAY ATHLETES AT CARN BREA
THREE OUTRIGHT CATEGORY WINS FOR NEWQUAY RR IN COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP 3000M
Report by Paul Wright
Under the Duchy Athletic Network (DAN) banner Newquay Road Runners and Newquay & Par AC competed in one of the two 3000m races on the track at Carn Brea, the evening was a tremendous success with some fine running on show. For many competing this was their first experience of track running, entry for each race was based on predicted times, the first race, which was classed as the Senior County Championship, was for sub 11-minute athletes.
The weather was unfavourable for fast times as it was windy down the back straight and very cold.
The winner of the men’s race, making him the 2018 County 3000m Champion was Cornwall ACs Tom Slattery in 9 minutes 8 seconds which equates to a 4.54 mile pace, 2nd home was last year’s winner Hayle Runners Floyd Ratcliffe in 9.13 which was 7 seconds faster than his winning time in 2017 and 3rd place went to Slattery’s club colleague and under 20 athlete Sam Goodchild in 9.18. The first Newquay RR home was Alex Daniels whose 10.09 placed him 11th overall.
The ladies race was a class act too with international athlete Grace Brock, Cornwall AC, who finished 7th overall in 9.50. Cornwall AC also took 2nd and 3rd with Heidi Tregennza in 10.01 and Katie Hughes in 10.16. The first Newquay RR lady was Eleanor Dixon in an excellent time of 11.49 which saw her collect 1st place and a county medal in the ladies 40-44 category. Although outside her personal best, 15-year-old N&P athlete Lauren Webster ran 12.00 which placed 32nd overall and first under-17 female.
Another outstanding performance on the evening was by Truro’s Tony Berry, whose 16 minutes 2 seconds currently places him number 1 in the UK over the 3000m distance in the 80-84 male category, his average pace equated to 8.35 per mile an amazing achievement for an 82-year-old.
It was a delight to see a number of clubs working together in the evening to ensure those competing were part of an extremely well-organised event.
The times and overall positions of those representing either Newquay RR or Newquay & Par AC were as follows:
2nd M 45-49
